New Acquisition District
In 1772 the straight east-west line between the colonies of North and South Carolina was redrawn to make a corner on the old line near the Andrew Jackson birthplace. Old Mecklenburg and Tryon counties of North Carolina gave up what became all of York County South Carolina and all the land north of the extended southern boundary of York County. The area below Charlotte and Shelby NC around Spartanburg and Greeneville was the “New Acquisition.”

Whereas the residents were accustomed to being North Carolina citizens, they continued to look to the leadership of General Rutherford for militia deployment. The battleground at Kings Mountain falls into South Carolina because of the 1772 New Acquisition.
